Childbirth classes prepare expecting families for the challenges, joys, and questions that will inevitably occur during labor, birth, and postpartum. As part of a quality, comprehensive childbirth class, you will also gain an understanding of c-section. Your childbirth class should include the following on cesarean:
- Ways to avoid a c-section (there are many!)
- Why a c-section would be needed medically
- Reasons a c-section might be suggested for convenience
- Questions to ask your doctor about her use of c-section
- Questions to ask your place of birth to determine the rate of c-section
- What to expect during the c-section process
- Choices you can have during a c-section -- you can have a say in what happens!
- Challenges and complications that may arise due to c-section
- Recovering in the hospital from a c-section
- Breastfeeding after a c-section
- Long-term recovery and support needed after a c-section
- Options for future births
While most families do not want to think about the possibility of their birth ending in cesarean, it's vital to become educated on the facts. With 1 in 3 women experiencing cesarean births currently in the United States, you are at a high risk for the surgery simply by being pregnant! The more you can learn about your choices in birth, including ways to prevent a cesarean, the more you increase your chances of having a safe and healthy birth. Before you sign up for a childbirth class, talk to the instructor to find out what is covered on cesarean during class. As questions about specific topics covered and the amount of time spent. If coverage seems scant, seek out a different class and instructor.
Lamaze classes taught by a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE) include quality instruction on birth interventions, including cesarean, as well as information on choices in childbirth and advocating for yourself. To find a Lamaze class near you, search our directory. To begin learning about vital choices in childbirth, check out the online Lamaze class called "Safe and Healthy Birth: Six Simple Steps."
