We want to highlight a handful of the great blogs out there for and by Black mothers and families. These blogs provide helpful resources, informative and relevant voices, and a welcome blend of humor, wisdom, and compassion.
What it is: A blog "for Black moms" that deals with the critical topics of motherhood and the work-life juggle. The description goes on to say, "By presenting a more realistic narrative of Black motherhood, Mater Mea opens the ongoing 'Can women have it all?' conversation to Black women." The blog was founded by Anthonia Akitunde who is also the editor-in-chief. Together with founder emeritus Deborah Choi, the two created the site out of a lack of resources in the mainstream media that showed a "realistic and relatable view of Black motherhood" as well as professional women of color.
Resources you'll love: "Role Mamas" - interviews with Black women about how they became mothers, wives, professionals, and more. The sections on "Culture" and "Wellness" among other more typical pregnancy and parenting related sections.
What it is: Creator Onyi, a Nigerian American and Physician's Assistant living in San Antonio, TX, shares life lessons and tips that she says are #BusyMomApproved. Onyi describes the blog best as "inspiring women to let go of perfect while taking full advantage of all that life has to offer."
Resources you'll love: Just three sections with lots and lots of topics inside -- "Sincere Motherhood," "Sincere Travel," and "Sincere Lifestyle."
What it is: The brainchild of Shanicia Boswell, Black Moms Blog was created based on a real need to see and hear from more Black mothers' voices. The blog offers posts with general parenting tips, recipes, DIY, cultural and current events, and highlights Black businesses and their business owners.
Resources you'll love: So many relevant topics for new parents, pregnant parents, and experienced parents. Plus, a section devoted entirely to food -- breakfast, snacks, and dinner; and a spot just for arts and crafts.
What it is: Dubbed "The Fastest Growing Community For Black Moms," MommiNation is made of a community of 25 "Mombassadors" who share all things related to motherhood. The belief at MommiNation is "it takes a village to raise a child, and a NATION to support a mom!"
Resources you'll love: The sheer amount of topics covered at MommiNation are awesome! My personal favorites include "Taking Care of Mommi," "The No Judgment Zone," "FiscalMommi," and "StepMommi."
What it is: NYC millennial mom of three, Adanna, is the owner and writer behind Rattles and Heels which includes all the things you'd expect from a mom/pregnancy/birth/parenting blog, along with a New York City slant. Whether you're a big-city-dweller or not, you'll be able to find well-written and helpful info throughout blog.
Resources you'll love: The mix of essential pregnancy and baby tips combined with fun travel resources and maternity and postpartum fashion advice. Plus, there's a whole section called "NYC Family Guide!"
