As childbirth educators, we don’t need reminding that the mind-body connection holds incredible significance for safe and healthy pregnancy, labour and birth. Anxiety, stress, fear, and worry all hinder the cocktail of birth hormones we pay frequent tribute to in our classes. When I started reading Mindful Pregnancy (DK, 2020) by Tracy Donegan, there were just a few confirmed cases of COVID-19 in my state of Washington. By the time you are reading this, things are almost unrecognizable. In a world that is humming with anxiety, with no clear end in sight, Donegan’s pregnancy guide is quite timely. It provides comfort to pregnant people, with practical guidance for how to deal with stress.

Families worldwide are facing new and unforeseen challenges as they prepare to birth during this world-wide epidemic. Circumstances are changing daily, if not hourly in locations around the world. Many childbirth and parenting programs are now being presented in a virtual format to families. Educators have been scrambling to convert activities to an online format that builds confidence and prepares families effectively for their labor, birth and early parenting time ahead.

On March 27, the U.S. House of Representatives passed S. 3548, the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act, a ~$2 trillion economic relief and stimulus package for individuals, health facilities, states, and businesses affected by COVID-19. President Donald Trump also signed this bill into law on March 27, 2020, implementing the largest fiscal-relief packages in U.S. history.

Every country in the world, on all the continents, with the exception of Antartica, is facing the COVID-19 pandemic and all that entails. Each government is acting independently to take action to protect their citizens. And in the meantime, the babies will keep coming. The World Health Organization has published some clear and concise infographics that effectively illustrates best practice that all perinatal facilities and providers should be following.

In a post earlier this week, I shared some tips on how to move your classes into virtual mode, which means running live classes in real time, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that we are all dealing with. Lamaze International is pleased to announce its support for the Congressional Black Maternal Health Caucus’ Momnibus that Caucus members introduced on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. The Momnibus is a package of nine bills that each implement specific measures to promote maternity care for women disproportionately affected by maternal mortality and morbidity, and who have poorer childbirth outcomes than the national average. These bills build upon existing legislation that seeks to extend Medicaid coverage to 12 months postpartum, increase access to birth and health centers for underserved populations, and develop maternity care quality standards and supports maternity care collaboratives.
