As a follow up to Lamaze International's statement indicating our organization stands against inequality and injustice, I wanted to share a rich resource just brought to my attention that is designed for health care providers and perinatal professionals. The Birth Place Lab in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada as an information page directed at actions that people can take now to fight racism against Black people. There are also added resources discussing the oppression on Indigenous people, and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Lamaze International acknowledges, and is deeply saddened, by the recent events that so clearly reflect the deeply entrenched racism, social injustice and inequities that plague communities of color. We believe that equality is a basic human right and we stand in support of respectful, equal and just treatment for all people of color.

Moving birth and parenting classes online has been of critical importance since it no longer became safe to hold classes in person due to COVID-19. Just because classes are delivered through an online meeting platform does not mean that information should be shared only view a slide show presentation. It’s not easy to deal with the stress of pregnancy, labor and the postnatal period during the best of times but for most, Covid-19 has severely compounded the struggle. My babies and grandbabies were born more easily and safely with what I learned in my first two Lamaze classes. Why not donate? The benefits to me and future generations are worth sustaining. The process of donation is easier with technology and respectful of my finances. I can donate a smaller amount monthly that adds up to a respectable donation without causing me anxiety to Lamaze that has given me so much. I hope you’ll consider volunteering and donating and take advantage of all that Lamaze has to offer. You’re the next jewel in our tribe.

The Daybreak Star Doulas program in collaboration with Indigenous artist Wakeah Jhane created a free set of seven birth affirmation prints that are available in your choice of four different sizes. These powerful images and their messages are uplifting to Indigenous people across Turtle Island (Indigenous name for North America) as well as people from many other cultures. The affirmations are truly relevant to all the people who are bringing a baby earthside.

As you may know, maternal and child health (MCH) entities within each state are preparing Title V Needs Assessment for the current and future MCH programming. The Title V grant provisions stipulate that states conduct these needs assessments every five years. This multi-year process helps determine the current needs of each state, the success of programs that the Title V MCH Block Grant supports, and the initiatives or programs that future grant funding should support.

In April, the U.S. General Accountability Office (GAO) released its assessment of the federal government’s current programs and efforts to address maternal mortality through its report, Trends in Pregnancy-Related Deaths and Federal Efforts to Reduce Them. The GAO analysis focused on the U.S. maternal mortality increase between 2007 and 2016, the annual morality ratio fluctuation, and how the leading causes of death varied by racial ethnic group.
